We stayed in a farm in Africa, at the foot of the Ngong Hills. But that is not seriously the get started of our journey. It genuinely commenced in Mombasa and obtaining picked up by our guideline/driver Sammy. He will be with us for the next 6 days from Mombasa to Tsavo to Amboseli Countrywide Park and then onto Nairobi. Sammy is helpful, quick to converse to and professional about not just mammals but about all the birds that we are observing. This was especially critical to Kati who loves to photograph all the birds in Africa. It took us a pair of hours to get to our lodge in Tsavo East and the time went by immediately.
We stayed at Satao Camp and had been fortunate more than enough to get the tent closest and experiencing a pretty common drinking water hole. Like looking at “Animal TV”, in excess of the upcoming pair of times and evenings we saw herds of elephants, antelope, giraffes, hippos and warthogs stroll out of the bush and arrive to this waterhole. This was the get started of our journey, and we were happy to be back again in Africa.

Why Tsavo?
Tsavo is the location in which there were being two guy-having lions roamed and ate more than 100 people today in 1898 as depicted in the motion picture The Ghost and the Darkness starring Val Kilmer and Michael Douglas. Tsavo East is the biggest activity park in Kenya, and it was a option we had to make: Tsavo East or Tsavo West. We chose Tsavo East largely mainly because of Satao Camp, and we are content we did. More than the following 4 times we saw lions following a destroy, the pink elephants of Tsavo, hippos, giraffes, and a leopard in a tree with its destroy. The landscape was surreal. Dusty and dry, Tsavo wanted the rains. But they never arrived although we had been there. We also observed The Genuine Africa, like the a single explained by Isak Dinesen’s e-book Out of Africa.
Established out in the middle of the bush, our camp and the drinking water gap ended up properly positioned for the video game drives and to see a multitude of animals coming and going from miles absent to consume. We could working experience the pleasure of the elephants coming around a ridge and looking at the drinking water hole. Herds of zebra and antelope. We even had a genet in the dining space that came 1 night seeking for food. With the fireplace roaring, we ate delectable foods for breakfast, lunch and meal and experienced sport drives most mornings and evenings. We had a complete working day recreation travel on a person of the times and it proved stunning as we observed 5 lions on a hunt, and then they arrived and sat down. We have been so close as they relaxed, slept and saved vigil. This was an remarkable expertise and we definitely felt that we identified The Genuine Africa.
This was why we came again to Africa. It did not have the multitude of animals like Masai Mara, but it experienced the seem and feel of a real African experience. Really don’t get me improper, if there was just one place, I would advocate viewing the Large 5 it would be the Masai Mara or to practical experience the Great Migration. But we were wanting for a little something different. Anything that I had not seasoned because I lived in Africa. Anything that was totally unanticipated. And Tsavo sent.

An Unbelievable Journey
This was the fourth time Kati and I have been to Kenya. We have also explored Uganda and Egypt, and I have lived for more than 4 years in Zimbabwe and virtually a calendar year in South Africa. We have also traveled to Cape Verde, Botswana, and Morocco, so we are not strangers to the African continent. But this time we needed one thing distinctive. We wished an “Out of Africa” adventure loaded with animals, tented camps and good landscapes. And we obtained just that.
With our tent, beautifully embellished with previous Africa furnishings and overlooking the water hole, we had been able to check out animals from a few of kilometers absent traveling through the dusty bush. The noticeable pleasure that elephants knowledge when eventually viewing the drinking water hold was outstanding. They would get started to trot, flapping their ears practically with smiles on their faces. Large Tuskers, moms with their younger, and one bulls all arrived and went. We hardly ever weary of it.
In the evenings, Impala loaded the camp when jackals ended up on the prowl. Hippos left the water gap and went to graze all night time returning in the morning and elephants took above. Zebra, water buck and giraffe all frequented. And there was a genet who would occur into the eating area on the lookout for something to eat ahead of heading again into the bush.
From our tent and about the camp we also noticed owls, eagles and oryx.
This all occurred in advance of we even still left for a recreation push. This was a nightly occurrence as we lie in bed seeing the animals come and go in entrance of us. It was astounding.
There ended up lots of camps to decide on from in Tsavo, but we selected Satao Camp. It gave us that fantastic journey and “Out of Africa” feeling, and the expense was superior. We located the Real Africa and will return in this article in the potential.

Game Drives
We had two private activity drives a working day set up. Each in the morning and night. Sammy our manual recommended we get one day and go more into the park and devote the day. Satao Camp geared up a lunch box for us and we set out on our journey. Tsavo was unbelievably dry and dusty. The pink earth filled with air as we appeared for the legendary African animals. Sammy was outstanding and educated about all the animals, the park, birds and wherever to go for the ideal sights. A single of the ideal areas of Tsavo is that it is uncrowded, and we have been just about by itself most of the time we ended up there.
The final day, as we have been almost out of the park, seeking for a cheetah, we heard that there was a leopard in a tree with its destroy. Sammy asked if we required to go again. Of class we did! A leopard in a tree? That was on my want checklist for a prolonged time. Possessing found 4 leopards beforehand, they ended up all on the ground I seriously needed to see a leopard with a eliminate up in a tree.
We raced to the place it was and by the time we acquired there, the leopard left the tree. But as we received discouraged, Sammy claimed he noticed it in yet another tree. It had climbed up to hold an eye on his eliminate, and there he was. Sammy spotted it and we were overjoyed as we snapped pictures. Sammy was a good guidebook crammed with awareness and eager to share. We cherished expending our time with him and were sad when we left him in Nairobi.

Eventually we uncovered the Leopard in a tree. He experienced his get rid of in a nearby tree and retained observe.
Our Ultimate Phrase
Following 4 unbelievable times, we had to say goodbye to Tsavo. It was crammed with iconic African wildlife together with leopards, lions, elephants, giraffe, kudu, waterbuck, impala, zebra, oryx, owls, eagles and a whole whole lot much more. We ongoing our experience to Amboseli Nationwide Park which is renowned for its big herds of elephants and stunning views of Mount Kilimanjaro. We will include that element of the experience in an additional write-up.
We desired to obtain the Genuine Africa and we did. We wanted that legitimate Out of Africa encounter, and we received it in Tsavo. We ate delicious food less than the African moon, viewed animals at the h2o gap, experienced extraordinary recreation drives with Sammy our guideline every single day and nonetheless had time to read, create and chill out. This adventure checked off all the boxes for us and we glimpse ahead to returning someday.
If you are seeking for a accurate, genuine African adventure that is not overrun by travellers then glance to Tsavo and Satao Camp. We just may well see you there.
Dennis would like that.
